Qualifications

Willingness to actively engage in the work of your union

Ability to attend monthly Steward meetings
Duties and Responsibilities
Build Relationships and Communication at Your Worksite/Within Department
-
Present a positive image of PEA and our union values
-
Establish open and consistent communication with members and potential members
-
Maintain confidentiality for member issues
-
Hold 10-minute monthly meetings at worksite/with department in a timely manner
-
Introduce yourself as the Building Steward to all staff throughout the year
-
Meet regularly with worksite administration/department supervisors to discuss issues
-
Actively engage members in the work of their union (votes, surveys, meetings, events)
-
Maintain PEA bulletin board with relevant and accurate information
-
Distribute PEA material and information as needed (place in mailbox, etc.)
-
Communicate with other stewards, organizers, assigned Executive Board liaison, PEA Service Unit Directors, and elected Leadership on issues, as needed
Strengthen Our Union through Membership Power

Regularly speak with potential members, especially new staff as they are hired

Assist potential members in joining PEA

Develop and maintain a team at your worksite/department for implementing organizational and membership goals at your school

Educate members and potential members on PEA values, initiatives, benefits, and opportunities

Use contract allotted time to make PEA announcements at staff meetings

PEA Executive Board Duties and Responsibilities:

MUST be a PEA member in good standing

Attend all Executive board meetings

Help create and execute strategic goals for PEA
-
Track attendance of stewards within your district at steward meetings to look for engagement
-
Serve as a back-up for schools within your district that are without a steward for member assistance
-
Coordinate with organizers within your district for PEA calls to action, data requests, events, etc.

Engage stewards, organizers, and members within your district to help build benches of activists and leaders
-
Introduce yourself to new contract stewards serving in your district elected schools as their elected district rep
-
Assist new contract stewards within your district as they learn the functions of their duties and responsibilities
-
Vote on new business items that occasionally occur throughout school year
PEA Executive Board Seat Allocation:
-
Up to 4 total seats in each of the 7 districts
-
Up to 8 total seats occupied by PEA Committee Chairs (ALL seats are currently filled)
Contract Steward (CS) Allocation:
-
Workplaces having 1-29 members are entitled to one (1) CS.

Workplaces having 20-39 members are entitled to two (2) CSs
-
Workplaces having 40-59 members are entitled to three (3) CSs
-
Workplaces having 60-79 members are entitled to four (4) CSs and so on…
Contract Steward (rep) and Executive Board Election Process:
If the number of nominees is equal to or less than the number of seats entitled, the nominees(s)
shall be declared elected by acclamation. If the number of nominees exceeds the number of seats entitled, a vote shall be taken. Election is by simple majority. If there are multiple seats available, those with the most votes will fill the seats until all vacancies are covered. For example, if you have 2 seats available and 4 nominees, you will vote for up to 2 of the 4 to determine who fills the seats.
